How to find out what your shoppers are asking

Five places your shoppers' questions are already written down, and how to turn them into better product, delivery and returns pages.

Why it matters

Every question a shopper asks is something a page didn't tell them. Collect the questions and you have a to-do list for your pages, ranked by how often each comes up.

Five places to look

  1. Your inbox. Search the last three months for “?” and group what you find.
  2. Your site search. Most store platforms and analytics tools can show what shoppers search for on your store. Searches with no results are questions your pages don't answer.
  3. Reviews, yours and on marketplaces: “I wish I'd known it runs small” is a missing fit note.
  4. Social comments and messages, especially on ads.
  5. Returns reasons. “Not as described” means a product page is missing something.

Turn the list into pages

  • Count how often each question comes up.
  • For each of the top ten, decide which page should answer it, and add the answer there.
  • Repeat monthly.
