Selling abroad: answering shoppers in their language

Practical steps for a small store selling across borders: what to translate first, what to state for international shoppers, and how to answer questions in languages you don't speak.

What international shoppers ask first

  • Do you ship to my country, and how long does it take?
  • Who pays duties and taxes?
  • Which currency will I be charged in?
  • Can I return from abroad, and who pays?
  • Do your sizes match ours?

Answer all five on your delivery and returns pages before translating anything.

Translate in this order

  1. Delivery and returns pages.
  2. Size guide.
  3. Your best-selling product pages.
  4. The rest, as sales in that language grow.

Write so it translates well

  • Short sentences, one fact each.
  • Numbers instead of words (“7 days”, not “a week or so”).
  • Avoid idioms and wordplay in policies.
  • Give sizes in both cm and inches.

Answering questions in languages you don't speak

neb answers in the language the shopper writes in, from your pages. It says it doesn't know when your pages are silent, and the question reaches you in the morning report. See neb at any hour and in any language.

Put neb on your store

neb answers your shoppers from your own pages, in their language, at any hour, and tells you every morning what your pages couldn't answer. Or first, run the free FAQ generator on your store.
